What is an extended cab vs crew cab?
Doesn’t it feel like it doesn’t matter where you look, pickups are everywhere? The times when trucks were built only for work are in the past. Modern pickup trucks can be upgraded to be as luxurious as the most iconic names in luxury. There is a pickup truck for you, regardless of whether you require a workhorse or want the lap of luxury. Once you figure out if you must have 4-Wheel Drive (or if RWD will suffice), the next big decision is to decide what cab size is best for you and your needs.
A regular cab pickup truck features one row of seating with limited storage space and legroom, as the name suggests. A regular cab pickup truck was once the one way to purchase pickups. In most regular cabs, the seatbacks practically touch the back side of the cab. This model is the more “work” version of a pickup truck and is normally found with manual windows and locks. A regular cab is a work truck, not for hauling friends and family around.
As one could probably guess, an Extended Cab pickup (can also be called a Double Cab pickup) is just a Regular Cab with more space behind the front seating. When they were first introduced, extended cab trucks were available as 2-doors and only had small jump seats in the back. These days they may be called a Double Cab pickup truck, these trucks now feature a second row of small doors for access to the cargo area. Even though there are 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab pickup wouldn’t be the best choice for road trips, even though it can carry more passengers.
While not as obvious as the previous types, a Crew Cab pickup features 4 normal-size doors and the space to transport, well, your ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickup trucks are made to carry more of the driver’s stuff and passengers. In some circles, these kinds of pickups have become the family vehicle. A Crew Cab truck’s powerful engines and bigger size are not seen in the 4-door sedan segment while still being able to offer the legroom and comfort that families need.
